Swedish Black Hen
A Swedish landrace carrying the same fibromelanosis gene as the Ayam Cemani, so skin, comb, bones, and meat run black. Village flocks kept them in Sweden for centuries. The first US imports arrived in 2012 and the breed stays scarce.
Centuries of Scandinavian winters built a bird that shrugs off cold our valley never sees. Good fliers and sharp-eyed foragers that roost high given the chance. Hens brood and mother well. All-black birds vanish at dusk, so count them onto the roost.
