Sumatra
A striking ornamental from the island of Sumatra, kept for its beetle-green black plumage and long, flowing, pheasant-like tail carried low. Males often grow multiple spurs on each leg, and the dark gypsy face and pea comb complete a wild look. They fly well and range far, roosting high given the chance.
Needs room. Confinement wears on them, and tall fences barely slow them down. Excellent foragers and attentive mothers, with hens going broody readily. Modest layers of smallish white eggs. This one suits a keeper who wants a hardy showpiece that looks after itself, with production beside the point.
“The tail is long, large and drooping, carried at an angle of thirty degrees above the horizontal, with an abundance of long, flowing feathers and coverts, the plumage very lustrous greenish-black throughout.”
Disqualifications: Combs other than pea; white ear-lobes; feathers other than black in any part of plumage.
