Russian Orloff
An old Russian breed with Persian roots, named for Count Orlov, the nobleman who promoted it in the early 1800s. A full beard and muffs give the face an owlish look above a small walnut comb. The bird stands tall on a heavy frame with close, game-like feathering. Few flocks remain in North America.
Built for Russian winters. The walnut comb and muffed face shrug off frostbite that wrecks single-combed breeds, and hens keep laying through cold snaps. Expect a modest yearly egg count. Quiet birds that handle confinement without fuss.
