Red Junglefowl
The wild ancestor of every chicken on this board. Small, trim birds with the classic black-breasted red pattern. Hens lay in seasonal clutches the way wild birds do. American hatchery stock varies in purity, since junglefowl cross freely with domestic chickens.
These are closer to pheasants than to yard hens. They fly hard, roost high, and want cover to feel safe. A tall aviary or open woods with roost trees suits them. Hens hide nests and raise their own chicks well.
