Pavlovskaya

Also known as: Pavlov chicken, Pavlovskaja

Russia's oldest crested breed, from the village of Pavlovo, nearly wiped out after the revolution and rebuilt by Russian fanciers late in the twentieth century. Spangled plumage, a helmet crest, a beard, and feathered legs dress a small hardy frame.

Keeper's notes

Bred for Russian village winters, so our coldest nights barely register. Active birds that like to range and fly better than most crested breeds. Egg count stays modest. US stock is thin; expect breeder prices.
