Niederrheiner
A German table breed built in the early 1900s on Malines lines from across the border. Big, wide birds, most often in cuckoo or birchen patterns. They lay better than most heavy breeds while still filling a roasting pan.
Quiet birds a low fence contains. They finish slower than a hybrid broiler and lay well enough to earn their place year round. Cold gives them no trouble. Fresh US imports mean small breeding pools, so ask sellers about their lines.
