Minorca
The largest Mediterranean breed, laying the biggest white egg of any standard chicken. Glossy black plumage with huge white earlobes and an enormous single comb. Rarely broody.
That comb is a frostbite magnet in real cold, so northern keepers want a dry, draft-free coop and jelly on the comb in a freeze. Heat rarely bothers them.
“The lines of breast and body are well rounded, and the general bearing of the birds, male and female, is graceful, and commanding for their size.”
Disqualifications: Black variety: red in ear-lobes covering one-third or more of surface; red in any part of plumage; pure white in plumage extending more than one-half inch; shanks other than dark slate or nearly black, except the natural fading from age.
