Marans
French breed from the port town of Marans, famous for the darkest brown eggs of any chicken. Black Copper is the flagship variety; Cuckoo, Blue Copper, and Wheaten are also common. French-standard birds have lightly feathered shanks; English-type birds are clean-legged.
Hardy in cool, damp weather. The light shank feathering on French-type birds picks up mud, so give them dry runs in winter. Egg color fades late in a laying cycle.
