Hamburg
Old European breed nicknamed the Dutch Everyday Layer for its steady output of smallish white eggs. Rose comb over a sleek build, with spangled and penciled varieties that catch the eye. Hens seldom go broody, and the birds stay standoffish.
The rose comb handles cold well. Turn them loose and they range hard, roosting in trees if you let them. Fence tall or cover the run.
“They breed remarkably true to type, birds at all ages showing symmetrical outlines in striking contrast to other Standard fowl.”
Disqualifications: Golden Spangled variety: red in ear-lobes covering more than one-third of the surface; absence of distinct bars across the wings; markings wholly crescentic; shanks other than leaden-blue, except the natural fading from age; hen-feathered male.
