Dorking
Ancient five-toed table breed, possibly brought to Britain by the Romans, with a long, low, rectangular body on short legs. Renowned for centuries as the finest English table fowl. Hens brood readily and mother well.
Short legs keep the breast close to the ground, so muddy runs soil them quickly; dry footing matters in wet climates. Large single combs on cocks want frostbite care in freezes.
“The male is large, with a broad, low-set body that is rectangular in shape, as viewed from the side, possessing a long, deep keel and short legs, which give the bird a solid and compact appearance.”
Disqualifications: Silver-Gray variety: shanks other than white or flesh color; absence of fifth toe.
