Breed guide

Buckeye

The only APA breed developed entirely by a woman, Nettie Metcalf of Ohio, in the 1890s. Deep mahogany with a pea comb and a slanted, meaty back. These birds hunt mice and forage hard.

Keeper's notes

The pea comb puts it among the most frostbite-proof American breeds, which is what you want in a cold wet winter. Give it range or a big run. Penned tight, a Buckeye gets restless.

From the 1910 Standard of Perfection
Class: American
Standard weights: cock 9 lbs, hen 6.5 lbs, cockerel 8 lbs, pullet 5.5 lbs

“Body, rather long, broad, deep, full, heavy for size of bird; keel-bone, long, straight, extending well forward.”

Disqualifications: Ear-lobes more than one-fourth enamel white; entirely white feathers in the plumage.
