Brahma
Massive feather-footed breed developed in America from Shanghai-type birds in the mid-1800s, once called the King of All Poultry. It carries a pea comb under dense feathering and keeps laying through winter. Birds take a long time to mature.
Pea comb and heavy plumage handle deep cold. In a wet winter the feathered feet cake with mud, so keep runs dry and check the toes for mud balls when it freezes. These birds are heavy, so set the roosts low.
“The solidity of form and compactness of plumage unite, in the standard Brahma male, to produce a finely-proportioned fowl of large size and active nature.”
Disqualifications: Light variety: solid black feathers in back; positive black spots prevalent in web of back feathers; vulture-like hocks; shanks any color other than yellow or reddish-yellow; birds falling below disqualifying weights.
