Ancona

Also known as: Mottled Ancona

Italian layer from the port of Ancona, black with white-tipped mottling that spreads with each molt. Lay comes close to a Leghorn's, and the dark mottled plumage hides a bird better on range. Hens rarely go broody.

Keeper's notes

Turn them out and they range well, keeping an eye out for predators. The single comb wants frostbite care when it freezes. They are thrifty and cheap to keep.

From the 1910 Standard of Perfection
Class: Mediterranean

“Neck: Long, slender and gracefully arched; back rising in a gradually increasing concave sweep to tail.”

Disqualifications: Red in ear-lobes covering more than one-half of surface; red in any part of plumage; shanks other than yellow or yellow mottled with black.
